Sean Abbas is President of Threads, Inc. (www.threadsculture.com), a software company he co-founded to help organizations review employees on culture.  He has over 25 years of real world experience managing people and leading companies.  Sean is passionate about authentic communication and challenging the status quo.  He enjoys using stories from his management experience to help leaders understand and improve culture in their own organizations.  Sean is also owner of a manufacturing company called Baird Mounting Systems and is a member of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Board of Directors.

Full Auto-Biography (350 Words)
 

Sean grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  His first wake-up call with culture came at age 17 when he arrived at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA.  His time in the Marines taught him about things bigger than himself and being part of a team.

After the USMC, Sean was the 9th employee hired at a small company called Iowa Laser Technology.  Sean started off as a maintenance technician, moved in to various sales roles and spent his last 10 years as the company president.  Under Sean’s leadership Iowa Laser grew to over 200 employees, while producing financial results in the top 1% of its industry.

During Sean’s 22 years at Iowa Laser he experienced culture at every stage of the company’s growth.  Sean was there during company’s early days when everyone was accountable to each other and Christmas parties were held at the Buccaneer Bar.  He learned how to protect company culture during the transition from “small” to “big” and during down economies.  Sean also uncovered how it is possible for a great culture to exist in a large group of people.

Sean purchased his first business, Baird Mounting Systems, at the height of the financial crisis in October 2008.  Baird is the world’s leading antenna mounting systems manufacturer.  In 2012, he co-founded Threads, Inc.  Threads is a software company that gives organizations the tools to hire and review employees based company culture.

Through these new experiences Sean has learned how to improve and build culture when you start as an “outsider” and how to create a culture from scratch, when all you have is a strong belief in an idea.  As Sean continues to take on new challenges, his favorite part of the journey is still the people.

Sean is married to his wife Kim.  They have two adult children.  When Sean isn’t working, he can be found officiating USA Swimming events, fishing for the elusive 50 inch muskie (he’s caught a 49 1/2″), or on the golf course where his 21-handicap and golf buddies always keep him humble.
